Khajistan Portal Test: Day Two & Closing Party

Khajistan

Date:
October 24, 2026, 1:00 – 5:00pm

Location:
Recess

Khajistan founding member Saad Khan will give a closing talk reflecting on the development of the portal and highlighting new materials, contributions, and insights added since the opening event.

Then from 1:30-3 join us for ShadowWork: An Archival Intervention with Bahareh Khoshooee × Khajistan

In this hands-on workshop, artist Bahareh Khoshooee invites participants to engage with Khajistan’s archive through processes of fragmentation, recontextualization, and collective image-making. Using an overhead projector and transparencies, participants will select, cut, layer, color, and manipulate archival imagery, transforming existing visual material into new compositions through light and projection.

Through this process, the workshop considers the archive as a site of ongoing negotiation, where images are reinterpreted, histories are reassembled, and new meanings emerge through acts of intervention and collective authorship. We will then close out the residency with drinks and light dinner fare.

Visitors will be invited to contribute translations, identify people and places, trace the sources of images, add cultural or political context, flag errors, and suggest connections between materials. The session will also be used to test new features developed in response to the first Portal Test Day.

Visitors do not need to be researchers or specialists. Familiarity with languages, places, media, or cultural references represented in the archive is welcome but not required.

Bahareh Khoshooee is a multidisciplinary artist, educator, feminist activist, and the co-founder of two collectives –Blockbusters (an international group of New Media artists), and █████ (a network of feminist artists, activists, and technologists). Currently, a survey of nearly a decade of her work is on view at the Yeh Art Gallery in Queens, New York, through December 12.

Born in Tehran, Iran, in 1991, the year the internet was made available for unrestricted commercial use, Khoshooee employs time-based strategies to present work that fuses early internet aesthetics and Iranian kitsch sensibilities through 3D environments, video projection mapping, sculpture, performance, and sound. Her practice explores the complex dualities of technology: its oppressive role in surveilling, documenting, and criminalizing BIPOC bodies, and its radical potential for futurity and alternative solidarities. Her work unearths how technology mediates the intimate and collective experiences of grief, violence, and memory, reclaiming these spaces as arenas for liberation, and reimagined futures.

Khoshooee is the recipient of Eyebeam’s Democracy Machine Fellowship and a Skowhegan alumna. She has presented her solo installations at the Dorothy Center for The Arts, Baxter St CCNY, The Elizabeth Foundation for The Arts,The Orlando Museum of Art, and NADA MIAMI 2018 among others. Khoshooee has been included in various group exhibitions and screenings including the Museum of the Moving Image, Honor Fraser Gallery, Latinx Project, Southern Exposure, Museum of Photography Stockholm, and the Museum of Fine Arts St. Petersburg. Her work has been featured in Impulse Magazine, The Huffington Post, The Guardian, Artnet News, The Metro, and The Creators Project.
