Juanli Carrión: Building the Neverending Ruin of The World

Beginning in November 2011 and continuing through January 2012, Recess will collaborate with Abrons Art Center in New York and the Artium museum in Vitoria, Spain to realize Juanli Carrión’s On the Never Ending Ruin of the World.  This project uses a Google algorithm that searches the contemporary digital landscape for “ruins.”  The Google search is performed from two distinct global positions, in three languages.  Carrión then maps these sites and creates a visual representation of the points of interest.

Carrión at work

Carrión’s project will be on display at the Abrons Art Center from November 4th through December 23rd as part of the Parts and Labor exhibition, curated by Adrian Geraldo Saldaña as part of the series Prized Vernacular.  Carrión will be working from Abrons Tuesday-Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 10am – 2pm through December 8th. The artist will then begin work on the project from Artium museum.

In conjunction with Building the Neverending Ruin of the World, Juanli Carrión’s culled an experimental e-text from the e-mail conversation between exhibition producers Jonathan

Additionally, on December 7th at 7pm at Abrons Art Center Recess staff will participate in a panel discussion to continue the dialogue begun in the email text “The Journey.” Cecilia Jurado (Director, Y Gallery) and Blanca de la Torre (Curator, PRAXIS Program, ARTIUM) will join the original contributors to The Journey e-text for a conversation about the artistic process, addressing the roles of artists, exhibition spaces, institutions and curators, and their respective relationships with each other.
