Dear Friends,
2011 was a big year for Recess. After doubling the number of artists we support, launching a new online residency, and bringing our programming outside of NYC for the first time, one thing was clear: we are no longer an emerging startup.
Please consider supporting Recess to mirror our expanding commitment to ambitious projects that, according to Recess artist Scott Keightley, “could never happen anywhere else.”
In 2011 we…
- Operated out of storefronts in Soho, Manhattan & Red Hook, Brooklyn. WNYC named these locations #1 and #2 on their list of the top 8 alternative art spaces in NYC.
- Served 4000 visitors free of charge (twice last years numbers), offering what the NY Observer calls “unpredictable and exciting results.”
- Gave 20 artists and collectives our unique open-studio platform to create new work, through our signature program, Session.Past Session artist, Jeff Williams, reflected, “At Recess there’s an accelerated learning curve. In two months at Recess I learned the equivalent of a year of studio time.”
- Held over 20 free performance series, classes and events, including participation in Performa an NADA.
Our achievements are the result of your unyielding support. As you determine your giving, I hope you will remain part of a core group of passionate Recess supporters.
